August Superintendent Message: Welcome Back!

August Superintendent Message: Welcome Back!
Hayley Garard

August 1, 2022
Dear District 31 Community,
Welcome to the 2022 - 2023 school year! While it still looks and feels like summer outside, we are turning our eyes to the start of school and to the excitement of welcoming back our students, families, and staff for the start of a brand new school year.  The start of the school year, with its unopened notebooks, unsharpened pencils and the sense of new beginnings permeating every moment, is really my favorite part of any year.
As we move into the fourth school year impacted by Covid-19, health and safety strategies continue to be an important part of our planning and everyday functioning, however, we are beginning to feel the return to normalcy that we have all eagerly and patiently awaited. With this new sense of normalcy, we have had time to take a breath and refocus on new strategies and opportunities for student academic and social emotional growth and health. We are very excited for what the year holds.
I would like to highlight a number of exciting changes regarding District communications. Most notably, the District (and Field and Winkelman) have a new website. The websites are mobile-friendly and provide us with robust translation options to allow all of our families access to important school information. View the new website here
We are also excited to have a new email notification system to allow for more mobile-friendly, easy to follow email communication. You will also see changes to our school communication at both Field and Winkelman with Principal messages arriving in your inbox on Fridays with all the important school-specific information and increased communication from teachers or grade-levels. In addition, instead of weekly Superintendent messages, please check your inboxes the first Friday of the month beginning in September for a more comprehensive monthly newsletter with district information and events. Our August newsletter will be sent Friday, August 12.
To make sure you have the most updated information, we have put together a variety of handbooks and guides located here including:

  • Updated Student Staff Handbook
  • Health Addendum (addresses current Covid practices)
  • Safety Addendum (addresses protocols designed to promote safety)

Along with our increased communication, we are excited to begin the school year with a number of new faces including Assistant Superintendent of Curriculum and Instruction Meg Knapik, and Field Assistant Principal Kelsi Spain.
The staff and I look forward to working with all of you during the school year to continue to provide an excellent and well-rounded educational experience for your student/s.
