Coat Off Your Back Drive: Giving a Fresh start to new refugees, homeless, and vets

Rotary Club of Northbrook’s annual “Coat Off Your Back” drive will take place November 1 - December 15. The Rotary Club is collecting  new or like-new Winter coats for infants, children, teens, and adults to make sure that local refugees settling organizations such as Women and Children and
Homeless – Connections for the Homeless; PADS of Lake County; Wings; North Shore Helpers; Veterans – The Veterans Closet; Refugees – Refugee One; World Relief; HIAS; ECC; Stock the Shelves; Deerfield Free Store have a great supply to distribute to all ages.

Drive partners include Glenview Sunrise Club, Glenview Club, Deerfield Club and Two Men and A Truck.

Donation bins for the Rotary Clubs’ “Coat Off Your Back” drive can be found throughout the Village of
Northbrook and Glenview at the following locations through December 15th:

  • Northbrook Village Hall
  • Northbrook Library
  • Sunset Foods (Northbrook)
  • Weiss Ace Hardware (Glenview-on Waukegan)
  • Glenview Tennis Center (Park District)
  • Orange Theory (Northbrook)
  • Illuminate Northbrook (Event on Nov. 17th)

Northbrook Girls Softball

Registration is now open for the Northbrook Girls Softball Spring 2024 House League Season! NGSA’s House League accepts 2nd to 9th graders regardless of experience or ability. The Northbrook Symphony Orchestra (“NSO”) is excited to announce its 44th 2023-2024 concert season, and 5th under Music Director Mina Zikri’s leadership. 

The subscription season begins with consecutive Sunday concerts featuring “Two Generations” – Sunday, October 22nd with CSO Concertmaster Robert Chen and daughter Beatrice playing Mozart’s Sinfonia Concertante, and Sunday, October 29th with violinist Ilya Kaler and son Daniel performing Brahms’ Double Concerto.

The  “Winter Concert” takes place Sunday, January 14th , 2024 with rising star Timothy Chooi soloing in Beethoven’s Violin Concerto. That concert includes Brahms’ romantic 2nd Symphony.

“Virtuoso Violins” highlights Sunday, March 24th’s concert with renowned soloist Vadim Gluzman leading scholarship award winners from the North Shore Chamber Music Festival. Fireworks are sure to be in the air as these performers play popular show pieces from Ravel, Saint-Saens and Sarasate, along with other

The NSO’s 44th season concludes Sunday, June 9th in a program of Mexican music titled “Fiesta Mexicana“. The Sones de Mexico Ensemble will join forces with the NSO in presenting popular Mexican folk tunes and classical selections, including Marquez’ Danzon No. 2.

All concerts take place at 4pm at Glenbrook North High School’s Sheely Center for the Performing Arts. The Family Concert tickets are available now at $12.50 General Admission (as usual, tickets are complimentary for children ages 6-17 when accompanied by an adult). How do I get my event in the Virtual Backpack?

To be included in the District’s Virtual Backpack, an organization must be a local tax-supported community agency, a not-for-profit community organization offering sports and recreation program options for students, or a charitable group which has a current service learning connection or curricular connection with our schools or class groups.

Organizations that meet the criteria noted in paragraph two may include flyers that promote their services, activities, or events and a web link to their respective websites. Flyers must:

  • Be in PDF format 
  • Not refer to fundraisers unless the program is sponsored by District #31 
  • Not conflict with public tax supported efforts already in effect
